South Asian Network, Little Bangladesh Community Development Center Mural
Los Angeles, CA / 2024
Practice: Mural Design
The South Asian Network (SAN), is a community-rooted resource serving, supporting, and advocating for South Asians. In 2023 they opened up an office in the heart of Little Bangladesh in Los Angeles to work with community members at a grassroots level to alleviate poverty. Bangladeshi immigrants are among the most underserved South Asian groups in Southern California and this space has become the heart of the community offering English language proficiency classes, computer training, and been a safe haven for the neighborhood. As part of the new space, SAN commissioned a mural celebrating the rich diversity of South Asian culture and impact of SAN in the neighborhood.
The mural designed and painted by Ragni is a homage to the South Asian immigrant experience in LA from landing at LAX to finding community and activating for that community. It includes references to the key spaces for the South Asian diaspora in Southern California including Artesia and Little Bangladesh and people from various parts of the region fighting for their rights in America. It is the essence of what SAN stands for and now serves as a centerpiece of the space that inspires interaction, conversation, and activism within the community.
